You have recognised the need to change your lifestyle in order to reduce weight and to improve your health. You also have willpower because you have given up smoking. All you need now is a plan and some more of your willpower to achieve your aim.
Consider how much you eat. Specific weight loss plans may help, but you have to convince yourself not to consume so much. Think whether you want or need food, particularly snacks between meals. Have a glass of water rather than sweets or crisps. Most of us expect to feel full after a meal, but you should try to be satisfied eating a little less. Review your social activities as many people often default to a meal out. Instead, suggest more active alternatives, such as going for a walk.
Don?t become obsessed. Be patient, because it will take some months to reduce your weight gradually. Remain motivated and, in the longer term, you will feel much better having lost weight. The enjoyment of eating is short term and you probably feel guilty afterwards. When you are tempted to overeat, imagine that you are slimmer - and then don?t have that extra helping. Once you become used to eating less, it will become a habit that you can maintain.
If your GP agrees, produce an exercise plan that gradually increases your activity over a few months. It will be tough at first, but stick at it. As you become fitter, it will be easier to lose weight and you will find that you have more energy rather than less. Chose activities that are fun so you do not see them as a chore. Remember that exercise is also good for reducing stress and suppressing your appetite.
