What can you suggest for gallstones?

The gallbladder sits underneath the liver and acts as a reservoir for a substance called bile that is made in the liver and then passed into the digestive tract.

The function of bile is to dissolve fat, a bit like washing-up liquid, so that it can be properly digested in the gut. Gallstones are common in Western society. Mostly, they are symptomless, and the general thought is that these should be left alone.

Some sufferers however do experience recurrent bouts of pain and discomfort from their gallstones, and this is usually felt in the upper right hand side of the abdomen.

A frequent underlying factor in gallbladder pain is food sensitivity. This may be very relevant to you because food sensitivity is also a very common feature in irritable bowel syndrome, which you also complain of.

In one study, 69 individuals with symptomatic gallstones or persistent pain after removal of their gallbladder were put on a diet which consisted of only beef, rye, soy, rice, cherry, peach, apricot, beet and spinach for a week.

All of the 69 subjects in this study became symptom free. Then, foods were added one at a time back into the diet, to identify which ones appeared to provoke symptoms. In this study the worst offenders were egg, pork and onion, though it is probably a good idea for you to your food sensitivities on an individual basis.

Many health food stores offer a form of testing (Vega testing) which is quick, cheap and often yields useful results.

Another factor which seems to be associated with gallbladder pain is low levels of acid in the stomach (hypochlorhydria).

In one study, more half of individuals with gallstones were found to be suffering from this condition. Quite common symptoms of hypochlorhydria include bloating and belching after meals, indigestion and a feeling of fullness after relatively small amounts of food.

The diagnosis of this condition and its management would really need to be done through a naturopath or nutritional therapist.

In natural medicine there exists an herbal remedy which has been used for hundreds of years to dissolve stones in the body including gallstones and kidney stones.

The herb, called Quebra Pedra (which literally translated means 'stone breaker'), is still used by the indigenous people of the Amazon. In Britain, Quebra Pedra is available as a powder that can be made into a tea.

Take two heaped teaspoons and boil this in about half a litre½ l of water. This mixture can be drunk over the course of the day, either hot or cold. I would advise you to take this tea for between one and two months. Quebra Pedra is available from Rio Trading on 01273 570 987
