How can I get my three-year-old to eat?
Nearly all children will go through a stage of not eating or eating only certain foods. This often starts when they are toddlers and seems to peak around the age of three or four. So be reassured that your son's eating habits are very normal. Even so you're bound to be worried particularly if he fed normally as a baby and now appears to be on 'hunger strike'!
Believe it or not the answer is to ignore his eating habits and to continue to offer meals regularly. Don't make a fuss if he refuses them. The more you try to make him eat the more he will learn how much food matters to you and how he can use this to get your attention. Avoid the temptation of giving him top up snacks between meals as his hunger will increase the chance of him eating what he needs at his next meal.
Let your son join in group meals with your family or with other friends with young children. This might encourage him to try other foods - children are often much more interested in having what is on someone else's plate! Such group meals also take the focus of attention away from your son - you might find he eats more if he is offered what everyone else is having and is then left to his own devices.
You say that he drinks plenty of milk. Whilst this is reassuring remember that milk is also a food and is filling him up so that he is less hungry. I would cut down his milk to one pint of whole milk a day and only give water, not sweetened drinks or fruit juice if he is thirsty.
Milk is an important source of calcium and vitamins, but does not have enough iron for his needs so you cannot rely on this as his only food source. If his diet remains poor for several months you can supplement it with children's vitamins and possibly iron preparations but discuss this with your health visitor or GP first. They can check he is healthy and measure his weight and height to make sure he is eating enough to grow properly. They will also advise on and prescribe the right amount of supplements if he needs them as excessive iron and vitamins can be harmful.
