Meningitis Vaccine Not Good for Some Kids
For children with a kidney problem called nephrotic syndrome, giving them the meningococcal C vaccine seems to increase the likelihood that they’ll have a relapse, British doctors report.
"The risk of relapse after vaccination might be greater for this group of patients than the risk of meningococcal C infection," Dr. Richard S. Trompeter and associates write in the medical journal The Lancet. Children with nephrotic syndrome pass high levels of protein in their urine, because their kidneys are damaged. It’s probably caused by an abnormality of their immune system. In some cases, the problem can be kept at bay by giving them steroid drugs to suppress the immune reaction.
Stimulation of the immune system, by an infection for example, has been linked to the syndrome, but the effect of vaccination has not been looked at. The British researchers’ suspicions were raised when nine children with nephrotic syndrome relapsed after being given the meningococcal C conjugate vaccine, which was introduced in Britain in 1999.
To investigate further, Trompeter, of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London, and a team of doctors checked into the relapse rate among children with steroid-responsive nephrotic syndrome during the year before and the year after they were vaccinated.
Included were 106 patients who received the vaccine, among whom there were 63 relapses in the year before and 96 in the year after. In other words, the relapse rate was 50 percent higher after vaccination. The risk of relapse was especially high only in the first 6 months after inoculation.
Trompeter’s team calculates for every four children with nephrotic syndrome who are given the meningococcal C conjugate vaccine, one is likely to have a relapse. "So the decision to vaccinate should be carefully considered," they advise.
