Oxygenated fluid in abdomen helps ventilation
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In experiments using pigs, perfusing the abdominal cavity with an oxygen-carrying perfluorocarbon fluid boosted the amount of oxygen in the animals' bloodstream, researchers report.
It's possible this approach might help human patients with impaired breathing who have to go on a ventilator.
As Dr. Joseph S. Friedberg from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, told Reuters Health, abdominal, or peritoneal, perfusion "could prove to be a sufficiently benign intervention that it would be instituted early in the course of pulmonary failure to prevent ventilator-associated lung injury."
Friedberg and his colleagues used pigs with impaired oxygen uptake, so that they developed low levels of circulating oxygen, to investigate whether it was possible to use abdominal perfusion with oxygenated perfluorocarbon to provide significant levels of oxygen exchange.
Perfusion with oxygenated salt solution increased the average bloodstream oxygen level, but not as much as oxygenated perfluorocarbon under the same circumstances, the authors report in the medical journal Chest.
"These results of our principle experiments represent the first demonstration of the ability to perform peritoneal perfluorocarbon perfusion in a large animal resulting in the augmentation of systemic arterial oxygenation," the investigators conclude.
