Safe sleeping tips for your baby

Worried parents who place their babies on their fronts to sleep to avoid 'flat head syndrome' are putting them at greater risk of cot death.

An alarming survey found a fifth of mothers do not place their offspring to sleep on their backs, which increases the danger of cot death nine times over.

Here we look at advice from health experts at the Department of Health and the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths to keep your child safe...

From the beginning
Place your baby on its back to sleep. It is safer than side sleeping and there is not a greater risk of choking. For the first six months put your baby's cot in your room.

At five months
Continue to place your child on their back. They may start to roll over in the night. Gently turn them back but don't feel you need to check them constantly.

Do no smoke
Babies exposed to cigarette smoke have an increased risk of cot death. Do not take your baby into smoky places.

Get the temperature right
Babies do not need hot rooms. Keep the temperature at a comfortable level - about 18C (65F). Don't place your baby's bed near a radiator or with a hot water bottle. If your baby sleeps a lot wake them regularly for a drink.

Do not cover their head
Sleep your baby on a firm, flat mattress with a waterproof covering. Use sheets and lightweight blankets not duvets. Place your baby's feet at the foot of the cot so they cannot wriggle under the covers. Covers should be tucked in no higher than their shoulders.

Do not sleep with your baby
Never sleep with a baby on a sofa or chair. Don't share a bed with your baby if you are a smoker, have drunk alcohol or taken medication, or are very tired.

Seek prompt advice...
...if your baby has a highpitched or weak cry, is less responsive, looks very pale, is struggling to breathe, has a high fever or is taking a third less fluids.

Dial 999 for an ambulance...
...if your child stops breathing or goes blue, is unreponsive and unaware of what is going on, has glazed eyes and cannot focus, cannot be worken or has a fit.
