Voracious Reading Linked to Early Nearsightedness

Reading a large number of books per week may not only expand a child’s vocabulary, it may also increase his or her risk of developing severe myopia, or nearsightedness, according to a team of researchers from China and Singapore.

ISLAMABAD: - Reading a large number of books per week may not only expand a child’s vocabulary, it may also increase his or her risk of developing severe myopia, or nearsightedness, according to a team of researchers from China and Singapore.

The findings are based on a study of 957 schoolchildren aged 7 to 9 years in Singapore and Xiamen, China. In the study, Saw and colleagues investigated the relationship between nearsightedness, night-lights, and near-work activity--such as reading.

Roughly one third of the children in Singapore were nearsighted, in comparison to 18.5% of their peers in China, the authors report in the May issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.

Overall, children who read more than two books per week were nearly three times more likely to suffer from severe myopia than those who read fewer books, the report indicates. These results were true even when the investigators took into consideration the child’s age, night-light use, parental nearsightedness and other factors that may be associated with an increased risk of the condition.

In contrast, children who were exposed to any kind of night-light during their early pre-school years--before they reached 2 years of age--did not have a much greater risk of developing nearsightedness than those who were not exposed, the team found.

"There has been a debate about the role of night lighting as the evidence from prior studies have been mixed," Saw said. "In Asian children, night lighting does not seem to contribute significantly to myopia."

Despite the findings, Saw does not recommend that children read less, but instead calls for further studies "to identify other possibly modifiable risk factors (for nearsightedness), such as posture while reading, distance of book from the eye, and lighting conditions while reading," the researcher said.
