Everybody would agree that when any emergency situation happens, 911 should be notified immediately. Wouldn't it be absurd to wait to call 911 during the bombings at the World Trade Center, Oklahoma City, or the Atlanta Olympics? However, most people experiencing another type of emergency, a stroke (or brain attack), wait considerable amounts of time before contacting 911.
Stroke is now handled as a life-threatening medical emergency. Therefore the importance of early recognition and the notification of 911 at the moment of symptom recognition is crucial. Very simply, when you or a loved one is experiencing a stroke, we are working against the clock: TIME IS BRAIN. Therefore, it is extremely important that we all recognize the signs of a brain attack as early as possible.
Warning signs of a stroke (brain attack)
Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg especially on one side of the body
•Sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye
•Loss of speech, or trouble talking or understanding speech
•Sudden, severe headaches with no known or apparent cause
•Unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness or sudden falls, especially along with any of the previous symptoms
Not all of these signs occur in every attack and sometimes, the signs go away and return. However, if any of these signs occur, even for a short time, 911 should be called.
When you call 911, make an immediate notification that this is a life-threatening emergency. We have taken the task to train pre-hospital care providers -- Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) and Paramedics -- to be more proficient in performing patient assessments to help determine whether or not a patient is having a stroke. We are also instructing them as to what hospital facilities are best suited to treat a stroke patient, so that we can get that patient to the appropriate facility in the quickest fashion.
It is important to stay calm when accessing 911. The dispatcher is going to ask you some questions. Once that information has been provided, we’re going to need some assistance. We’re going to need you to make sure that if you’re at the location that we are going, make sure the door is open. If it’s at night, turn a light on so that we can more easily locate the house. Be prepared to depart when the paramedics are ready. We can’t wait for you, and we know that you want to accompany your loved one to the hospital.
When you call 911, who will respond? The answer to this question varies and depends on where you live. It could be, for example, the Fire Department or the Police Department. A basic life support unit, or Emergency Medical Technicians, may respond initially. Backing them up are paramedics, who are higher trained individuals that can provide medications and a greater, more definitive, level of patient care at the scene.
In conclusion, I would like to encourage you all to learn as much as possible about the plan of action that you need to take if you, or someone around you, is experiencing stroke symptoms. I would also encourage you to share this information with your friends, relatives, and neighbors. It is an issue that needs to be discussed throughout our communities.
