Common Sense Suncare Tips For Summer
Skin cancer has reached epidemic proportions in the Unites States over the past few years, accounting for fifty percent of all new cancers. Approximately one out of every five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of his or her lifetime. So, whether we like it or not, ours is the Age of Sun Protection.
Athletes are at particular risk for overexposure to the sun, with long hours spent outside sweating during the hottest hours of the day. Below, dermatologists Dr. Betty Bellman and Dr. Barry Resnik of the University of Miami, offer some hints to athletes about how to stay safe under the sun. Q: When's the best time to apply sunscreen?
BETTY BELLMAN, MD: Sunscreen is supposed to be put on the body twenty to thirty minutes before you actually leave the house to do your outdoor activities.
Q: Are there any particular risks associated with water sports?
BARRY RESNIK, MD: Yes. Water actually acts as a lens and lets the sunlight penetrate a little more deeply into your skin. You want to use a heavier sunscreen in the water. The heavier the sunscreen, the better it will stick onto your skin.
You should put it on at least thirty minutes to an hour before you go in the water, and then again after you get out and towel down.
Q: Are there particular risks associated with high altitude sun exposure?
BETTY BELLMAN, MD: Absolutely. The higher you go, the more intense the ultraviolet radiation. So you're going to get more UVB and UVA rays, especially UVB when you're skiing on a mountain. You have to protect your skin with at least an SPF 30 or higher that has both chemical sunscreens in it and a physical block, like titanium oxide or zinc oxide.
BARRY RESNIK, MD: And you still sweat when you ski, although many people don't think so. The easier the application, the more likely you're going to use it. That's why a stick sunscreen comes in handy. You just roll it on, and it's got a wax base that will allow it to stick on your skin more strongly.
BETTY BELLMAN, MD: And with a stick applicator, the sweat doesn't drip down. If you put it above your eyebrows, the sweat won't drip down past the eyebrows and cause the sunscreen to burn your eyes. It's a little trick, using a stick.
Q: Are there areas that athletes forget to protect?
BETTY BELLMAN, MD: A lot of people don't put sunscreen on their ears, their necks, or on their v-neck areas, and then sun damage occurs on these areas as the years go by. BARRY RESNIK, MD: You get a farmer's tan, you get a sailor's tan, you'll get the cross-hatch lines on the back of the neck, you'll start to develop little scaly things on your ears. The easiest way to combat this damage is to put your sunscreen on before you get dressed or before you put your swimsuit on so that you don't skip any areas.
Q: Do we need to wear sunscreen on cloudy days?
BARRY RESNIK, MD: Absolutely. You may not get sunburn immediately under the clouds, because the clouds are going to block a lot of the ultraviolet B wavelengths, but you're going to get a lot of exposure to UVA. The longer you stay out on a cloudy day without protection, the more you're going to get it. And it may take hours to develop, but you're going to end up with a burn.
Q: Do we have to be careful about products that claim to be "sweat-proof" or "water resistant"?
BETTY BELLMAN, MD: Yes. Many sunscreens or sunblocks will claim to be "rub-proof", "sweat-proof", "water-resistant", or "waterproof" but it isn't always necessarily true. It's also important to understand the difference between water-resistant products and waterproof products. Water resistance means you can stay out in the water for approximately forty minutes and the sunscreen won't rub off. Waterproof products allow you to stay out for eighty minutes.
Q: So do people need to reapply waterproof or sweat-proof sunscreens?
BETTY BELLMAN, MD: If you don't go in the water, you should reapply the sunscreen after two hours. If you go into the water and then towel dry, you should reapply then, because you're rubbing off a great deal of it with your towel.
BARRY RESNIK, MD: That's definitely one of the biggest questions I get in my practice. Parents want to know whether their kids need to reapply. You absolutely have to reapply it. Don't bank on waterproof, sweat-proof, or rub-proof. It isn't going to happen.
Q: Which are the most convenient sunscreen products?
BETTY BELLMAN, MD: There are sticks and sprays that are very convenient. You just put it on and leave without getting your hands messy. These sprays are wonderful because they spray on dry, and the sticks are even better because you can apply it wherever you want it to go. And they're very convenient. You can put them in your purse and you're ready to go. Greaseless sunscreens are great for athletes, too.
Q: What are the smartest clothes for athletes playing under the sun?
BARRY RESNIK, MD: Sun protective clothing is great for athletes. It is so tightly woven that it gives you protection without you even needing to use a sunscreen, yet it lets the air come in and out.
Conclusion
So whether you're a weekend athlete or a weekday warrior, devise a failsafe sun care protection plan. You'll be happy you did.
