Dental photos can detect cavities
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. dental researchers are combining digital photography with the Internet as an inexpensive way to screen for childhood cavities.
A common childhood oral disease that predominantly plagues America's inner-city toddlers, early childhood dental caries are more commonly known as "baby bottle tooth decay."
The cavities are caused by prolonged exposure to sweetened juices, often from sleeping with a baby bottle. These cavities tend to be overlooked by parents until the pain becomes so severe that the only option for the toddlers is sedation and extraction, according to study author Dorota Kopycka-Kedzierawski, a dentist at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
A child-care center health assistant can use a specially outfitted digital camera to take photos of children's teeth, and the photos are sent electronically to pediatric dentists, who detect cavities.
In a recent study, published in the Journal of Telemedicine & Telecare, University of Rochester Medical Center dentists documented how the new system showed that nearly 40 percent of 162 toddlers were suffering from baby bottle tooth decay. Most averaged about two cavities, but one child had as many as 20 decayed teeth.
