Should my baby have the MMR injection?

If your son has just started nursery you are right that he is more at risk of picking up infections from other children.

The risk is slightly higher in your son at the age of fourteen months as he is still developing his own immunity and has lost the immunity that you passed on to him through the womb and if you breast fed him.

Also there is a higher risk of mumps, measles and rubella in the community as a whole as fewer children are being immunised because of the recent media scares which have worried you.

In the light of all the public debate about MMR, it is hard to know what to do for the best. You are bound to be worried if your son had such a bad reaction to his DTP vaccination. Just because you have doubts your health visitor should not leave you to sort this out yourself.

You need to talk to your GP who should be aware of your concerns and who will also have further recent written information about the MMR vaccine. The advice I will give here is based only on what has been proven about MMR and not on speculation

I would not recommend giving either the first or the second dose of MMR as separate vaccines. Not only would it mean your son needing three injections instead of one each time, there is also no evidence that single vaccines are as effective as MMR or that they are safer.

Indeed, single vaccines are not licensed for use in this country so there is no control over what your son would be getting. There is considerable evidence of the effectiveness and safety of MMR vaccine.

Also your son's protection against each of the diseases would be delayed as the injections would be given at least a month apart, so increasing the risk of him catching one of the illnesses in the meantime.

Using separate vaccines is an untried and untested policy and could be a backward step in protecting children against measles, mumps and rubella.

Your son's egg allergy does not prevent him receiving the MMR vaccine. Even children with a very severe allergy when they eat food containing egg (involving swollen mouth and throat, breathing difficulties, shock) can be given MMR vaccine.

Google

Over 1,000 children with egg allergy have been studied - they were immunised safely with MMR vaccine. If your son has had a severe reaction when eating eggs or food containing egg, then you need to ask your GP to make special arrangements for his immunisation.

This will usually be done as a day-case at the Paediatric Department of the local hospital, much in the same way as I imagine his subsequent doses of DTP vaccine were given after his reaction to the first one. Your GP can also refer you to the paediatrician to discuss all your concerns about the MMR before you make any decisions.

We recommend readers seek personal medical attention in appropriate circumstances.
