What should I eat with thyroid problems?
Depression can be a direct or an indirect consequence of a thyroid problem. In fact, an under-active thyroid can cause everything from dry skin, hair loss and the blues to lethargy and fatigue, recurrent infections and sensitivity to the cold.
As you have continued to put on weight despite dieting and exercise I would suggest that your dosage of thyroxine is no longer suitable for your body's needs. Getting the dosage of thyroxine right can take lots of trial and error, so you may need several more trips to your GP or specialist to get it right.
Make a nuisance of yourself if it helps - getting your medication right is very important to both your physical and mental health!
In the meantime, eating healthily will boost your general well being, but it won't materially change the ability of your body to produce thyroxine.
However it makes sense to eat a diet low in goitrogens (foods containing substances that prevent the utilisation of iodine). These include turnips, cabbage, mustard, cassava root, soya and peanuts.
It would also pay to increase your intake of selenium and iodine which can be contributory nutritional factors in the defective production of thyroid hormones.
Iodine-rich foods are milk, seawater fish and seaweed which should be eaten regularly. Brazil nuts provide one of the richest sources of selenium, so eat two or three a day.
