Should I try a wheat-free diet?
Hirschsprung's disease is a rare disorder of the bowel in which ganglion cells which control the bowel's rhythmic contractions are missing.
It is normally detected straight after birth as faeces cannot be passed, causing constipation, stomach pain and vomiting.
To correct the potentially life threatening condition you will almost certainly have had surgery, which in theory should have left you symptom free and able to lead a normal life.
However, if you still have recurrent diarrhoea and constipation it suggests you may have been left with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) caused by the gut not contracting quite evenly.
Though I can't say whether it will definitely work I would suggest supplementing with a friendly bacteria supplement, such as a daily glass or two of Proviva probiotic fruit juice - this certainly works for IBS.
As far as the ulcers are concerned I would try supplementing with B vitamins and zinc and trying to reduce your stress levels.
Sometimes mouth ulcers can also be a side effect of iron-deficiency anaemia (which would also explain your tiredness) so it's worth asking your GP for a blood test.
Occasionally there is a link between a more serious inflammatory bowel disease and mouth ulcers. This could in fact indicate a need to remove wheat and gluten from the diet, but would also entail a proper diagnosis.
There are so many different medical / dietary possibilities however that I'd urge you to discuss all the possibilities with your GP before cutting anything out of your diet.
If you are a smoker this definitely won't be helping either, so you should quit for the sake of your health.
