Can natural medicine help PCOS?

Women manufacture the male hormone testosterone in their ovaries, but usually in very small amounts compared to men.

Some women, however, produce larger than normal amounts, and this may lead to an increase in hair growth on the body and face (hirsutism).

High levels of testosterone in women are often associated with a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

As its name suggests, PCOS is associated with multiple cysts in one or both ovaries. Other common symptoms of this condition include acne, breast pain, weight gain and mood disturbance.

Precisely what causes PCOS is not known for sure, but there is emerging evidence that the higher than normal levels of testosterone often found in sufferers is worsened by increased levels of another hormone - insulin.

Insulin is released in response to carbohydrate foods (sugars and starches), and fluctuations in blood sugar seem common in many individuals with PCOS.

Metformin is a drug normally used to treat diabetes, a condition characterised by high levels of sugar in the bloodstream. However, you may be able to get control over your blood sugar, and therefore insulin levels, using natural means.

Blood sugar balance is helped by eating smallish meals quite frequently. In addition, it makes sense to limit in the diet those foodstuffs that tend to release sugar quickly into the bloodstream which stimulate large amounts of insulin.

Foods to limit in this respect include sweet foods and sugary foods, white bread, pasta, white rice and potato. Foods that help to stabilise blood sugar levels include meat, fish, beans, pulses, nuts, seeds, green vegetables and fruits other than grapes and bananas.

More details about how to go about stabilising blood sugar can be found in my book Ultimate Health - 12 Keys to Abundant Health and Happiness.

In addition, I recommend that you take a natural supplement called GlucoGuard. It contains a range of nutrients that help with blood sugar balance. GlucoGuard is available by mail order on 0121 433 8729. Take one capsule, twice a day.
