Is my baby at risk of developing a nut allergy?

Thanks for your question. There is conflicting advice around about the risk of eating nuts during pregnancy and the main reason for this is that the research evidence is still inconclusive.

In 1998 the Department of Health reviewed all available research at that time. It is clear that there is an increase in nut allergies affecting both adults and children and there is known to be a genetic relationship.

Nut allergies are more common in individuals who have an affected relative. The DH took a precautionary view and issued a press release advising the following:

"pregnant or breast-feeding women who suffer from diagnosed allergic conditions, or where the father or any brother or sister of the [unborn] child has a clinical history of such conditions, may wish to avoid eating peanuts and foods containing peanut products.

There is no reason for pregnant or nursing mothers who do not fall into this category to avoid eating peanuts. Refined peanut oils or vegetable oils are unlikely to cause a problem."

Thus if you do not have a nut allergy yourself there is no reason to avoid nuts or nut products.

You can read more on the DH web site.
