Can alternative treatments help an itchy scalp?
In my experience, persistent itching in the scalp is caused by a long-term infestation with yeast organisms.
Although yeast is likely to be the culprit, treating just the scalp will probably not get rid of the problem for good. For long term relief from this problem you are going to have to treat the yeast from the inside.
The reservoir for yeast infection in the body is the gut. Here, the yeast thrives on a diet of sugar, alcohol and refined carbohydrates like white bread, white rice and pasta.
Other foods that encourage yeast growth are yeasty, mouldy or fermented foods such as bread, dried fruit, stock cubes, alcohol, vinegar, soy sauce, peanuts and mushrooms.
All the above foods should be eliminated from the diet for at least two months. Keep your fruit consumption for the first month at no more than two pieces a day and drink no fruit juice at all. Base your diet around meat, fish, fresh vegetables and whole grains like brown rice.
In addition, I recommend that you take a supplement containing healthy gut bacteria (acidophilus) for two months. This will help restore the balance of organisms here, thereby helping the body to control yeast naturally. Preparations of acidophilus bacteria are available from good health food stores.
For topical relief I would recommend a lotion or shampoo containing tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has natural antifungal properties that can bring tremendous relief from the itching and discomfort you describe.
More details about how to combat yeast effectively can be found in my book 'Ultimate Health - 12 Keys to Abundant Health and Happiness'.
