What can I eat to beat sugar cravings?
From the way you describe your predicament it sounds like you may have abnormally fluctuating blood sugar levels which need to be smoothed out in order to beat your strong sugar cravings.
To do this I would suggest a six point plan - if you follow these simple tips very carefully I feel sure you will see improvements which will lead to a dulling in your sugar cravings and more success in keeping off the weight.
So here goes, and good luck!
1. Never ever skip meals - eat three times a day and have healthy snacks in-between if you need them. See suggestions below.
2. Lower the glycaemic index of your diet (the rate it release glucose into your body) by eating fewer processed white carbohydrates and more unprocessed slow-release carbohydrates, such as multigrain bread, All bran, brown rice and all types of pasta.
3. Make it a rule that you will only eat sugary foods like sweets, biscuits, chocolate or puddings at meal times or straight after. That way you won't go crazy as they aren't banned altogether. If you really can't manage without something sweet between meals choose from fresh fruit, dried fruit, a pot of fruit yoghurt or a glass of low fat milkshake, although unflavoured milk is preferable.
4. Swap all sugary soft drinks for water, or the occasional diet soft drink.
5. Eat two portions of protein daily - meat, fish, nuts or pulses. One with your lunch and one with your evening meal.
6. Take a supplement of chromium, which is needed to help regulate blood glucose, and n-acetlyl cysteine. Recent research shows it can lower abnormally high levels of insulin which are a sign of disordered blood sugar levels. Both are available from major health food stores nationwide.
