Can thrusth affect my fertility?
Thrush infection can occur just out of the blue for no reason at all, but there are situations when it is more common, which include: • during pregnancy
• if you are taking antibiotics
• while you are on your period, due to reduced acidity of the vagina
• if you are on the combined oral contraceptive pill
• if you use perfumed soaps, bubble baths or personal • when you wear tight synthetic underwear - such as tights.
You can reduce your risk of getting thrush by avoiding the above factors. It is especially important not to rub the skin with flannels or sponges and to definitely not douche inside the vagina.
Sometimes recurrent attacks can be prevented in advance. For example if you know that it occurs around the time of your period, pre-treatment with canes ten can be helpful.
Not all thrush is sensitive to canes ten, so another problem might be that you have one of the more resistant types. This can be checked for by a swab taken just inside the vagina.
The best place to go to get this sorted is a sexual health clinic, sometimes known as a GU medicine clinic. They have lots more tests available than your GP and often run evening or 'walk-in' surgeries.
When I worked in a sexual health clinic recurrent thrush was a very common reason why women attended.
