Will my past prevent me from adopting
There isn't really an upper age limit, what the adoption panel would look at is your fitness and health and whether you could cope with adopting two children.
At 45 your life expectancy would suggest that you are young enough to be able to bring up two children. It would be important to disclose your 'overdose' but this would not bar you from adopting.
What they would look at is how you have coped since, whether you¿ve demonstrated that you have learnt from that experience.
Many people have problems health or otherwise but if they have recovered and coped with life successfully since then, this does not prevent them from adopting.
Talk to your GP about your plans, as he should know what you want to do. Don¿t be ashamed of disclosing this to the adoption services - you sound as if you have recovered well.
You also have the lovely testimony from your two step children, so if they are happy for you and their father to adopt more children go ahead and try. There are many children out there who would love to have a family of their own.
