How can I overcome postnatal depression?

Postnatal depression is surprisingly common, affecting at least 1 in 10 new mums. It's thought to be related to the massive fall in hormone levels that occurs after the birth of the baby, but it does seem that some women are more susceptible to these than others.

It sounds as though your sister knows she has postnatal depression, which is an important step in the road to recovery. Support - both emotionally, and also with the practical task of looking after a baby, can be incredibly helpful from you. The best people to provide this support - and reassure her that she is not going mad, and that she will get better - are her partner, and you and the rest of your family.

More structured support can be provided by her health visitor, and also by a professional counsellor. Many women with postnatal depression don't just feel low - they also feel incredibly anxious, usually about the baby, but sometimes about their own health as well, and this is where specific psychological therapies can be very useful.

Talking therapies can help readjust these illogical worries, and also help the woman feel more positive about herself. Talking therapies often are effective on their own, but some women also benefit from medication. In theory, boosting the levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone should be helpful, and most women prefer the idea of taking extra hormones rather than other drugs, but in practice there is little confirmed evidence that they work.

Anti-depressants however, have been proven to help many women with postnatal depression. Though the idea of taking anti-depressants can be alarming, they are not addictive, and there is usually no need to stop breastfeeding. However, many women make the mistake of stopping them as soon as they feel better - and unfortunately soon begin to feel low again.

For reduce the risk of relapse, anti-depressants should be continued for six months after the depression has lifted. Your sister should see either her doctor, or the practice nurse, or her health visitor on a regular basis - usually at least once every two weeks, to check how she is.

If this isn't happening, then encourage her to make an appointment. The excellent website of the Royal College of Psychiatrists - www.rcpsych.ac.uk can provide your with more information, and also has a list of organizations and self-help groups.
