There are a number of different causes of puffiness around the eyes. One common but under-diagnosed problem is low thyroid function.
The thyroid is a bow-tie shaped gland that sits in the neck and governs many of the body's fundamental processes including metabolism, temperature, weight and energy.
In addition to puffy eyes, under-functioning of the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can lead to an array of symptoms including sensitivity to cold, cold hands and feet, dry skin and hair, reduced sweating, weight gain, a hoarse voice, loss of eyebrow hair and low physical and mental energy.
Conventionally, a diagnosis of hypothyroidism is made by measuring the level of thyroid-related hormones in the blood.
However, there is mounting evidence that a significant percentage of people with normal thyroid function tests, nonetheless have many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism and may benefit from treatment.
A good guide to the working capacity of the thyroid is body temperature. If you suspect you have a thyroid problem, pop a mercury thermometer in your armpit for ten minutes immediately on waking and before rising.
Do this for a week or so. If your temperature is consistently lower that 36.4 C, suspect a thyroid problem, particularly if you suffer from several of the symptoms listed above.

In my experience, another common cause of puffiness around the eyes is food intolerance. While any food may cause a problem in this respect, certain foodstuffs, namely wheat and dairy products, seem to be the most common culprits.
You might try eliminating these foods to see if this helps. If this improves your symptoms, add different foods back into your diet every two or three days to see which cause a return of the puffiness.
In order to help pinpoint the foods to which you are sensitive, it can be worthwhile having some form of testing. The type of testing available in many health foods stores (Vega testing) is quick, economical and can yield useful results.
