Ulcerative colitis is a condition characterised by inflammation in the lining of the large bowel. Typical symptoms include pain, bloating and diarrhoea which can be bloody.
The symptoms of ulcerative colitis tend to come and go, with attacks being interspersed with relatively symptom-free periods. The condition is most common in young and middle-aged adults.
Although the cause of ulcerative colitis is not known for sure, there is some evidence that it may be triggered by reactions to certain foodstuffs.
While any food can cause a problem in this respect, dairy products (especially milk and cheese) and grains (especially wheat) are common culprits.
You might try eliminating these foods from your diet to see what effect this has. In my experience, this in itself will often improve the symptoms of ulcerative colitis.
Alternatively, you might have your individual food sensitivities assessed. The sort of food testing which is commonly available in health food stores, known as Vega testing is quick, relatively economical and may yield useful results.
It is believed that some people with ulcerative colitis have difficulty digesting starches and sugars, which can lead to the fermentation of carbohydrate in the gut by bacteria and/or yeast. This in turn leads to irritation and ulceration of the bowel wall.
Reducing or excluding fermentable carbohydrates such as grains, potatoes and sugar has helped a significant proportion of ulcerative colitis sufferers.
For more details about this specific approach, you might read Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall, available from the NutriCentre bookstore on 020 7323 2382.
One natural remedy I have often found very useful in treating ulcerative colitis are supplements of healthy gut bacteria called probiotics.
Try taking Replete, which is very high dose probiotic, at a dose of half a sachet each day for two weeks, followed by a supplement called Bio-Acidophilus at a dose of one capsule twice a day for three or four months. You can obtain these supplements from BioCare on 0121 433 3727.
