Can antidepressants be found in breast milk?

Your concerns about your grandson are understandable especially in the light of the recent media coverage about Seroxat.

The immediate answer to your question is that nobody knows whether there are any effects of the drug on breastfeeding babies of mothers who take Seroxat.

Certainly Seroxat is excreted in the breast milk of mothers who take the drug so your grandson will have been exposed to Seroxat. There have been no trials of the effects of Seroxat on human babies.

The manufacturer of Seroxat advises that Seroxat should be avoided when breastfeeding unless the potential benefit outweighs the possible risk.

This means that your daughter's doctor felt that your daughter's post natal depression would have been potentially more harmful to her and her son than any possible adverse effects from the Seroxat, so justifying treating her with Seroxat whilst she was breastfeeding.

There has not been any published research into what the drug might do to your grandson or what the signs might be.

The best way to proceed is for your daughter firstly to discuss with her doctor about coming off Seroxat.

This has to be done gradually, probably over several months, once her depression is better or less severe. Sometimes doctors change patients to a different antidepressant such as fluoxetine (Prozac) which can be easier to discontinue.

Secondly your daughter needs to make sure that her son receives all the routine developmental assessments. These are usually performed at around six to eight weeks, eight months, 18 months and two to three years of age.

The main purpose will be to hopefully reassure her and you that he is growing and developing normally.

However if at any stage your daughter is worried about her son's health, growth or development she should discuss these worries with her doctor.

You can be somewhat reassured by the fact that there is no published data showing long term harm to babies exposed to Seroxat in this way.

We recommend readers seek personal medical attention in appropriate circumstances.
