What can ease digestion after a gall bladder removal?

The gallbladder sits just underneath the liver. It's function is collect bile made in the liver, which it then stores and concentrates.

When fat is eaten, the gallbladder contracts to squeeze bile into the small intestine. Here, the function of bile is to 'emulsify' fat. This action is a bit like the effect washing-up liquid has on grease - basically breaking the fat up.

After this, the digestion of fat is completed through the secretion of an enzyme called lipase.

Those who have had their gallbladder removed sometimes find that they are unable to digest food, principally fatty food, as well as before their operation.

Avoiding food rich in fat such as dairy products, fried food, high-fat processed food, fast food, margarine and butter may help.

However, there are other steps you can take to help your symptoms. One agent that can help in the emulsification of fat is the food constituent lecithin (available in health food stores). I recommend that you take a dessertspoonful of lecithin when you eat a fatty or rich meal.

You may also benefit from taking a supplement called Lipozyme which contains concentrated lipase enzyme. Take once capsule after a fatty meal. To order, call BioCare on 0121 433 3727.

Another natural product that might help you is artichoke, as this is known to help increase the production of bile, and has been used extensively in Europe for many years as a digestive aid.

The supplement Cynara is a concentrated extract of artichoke, and taking this on a regular basis may improve your body's ability to emulsify and digest fat, and help control your symptoms as it does this. Cynara is available from all good chemists and health food shops.
