Has my baby got a heart murmur?
The word murmur is used to describe the noise made by the blood as it flows through the hearts and big vessels leading in and out of the heart.
Doctors often hear murmurs when they listen to a child's chest with a stethoscope during a routine examination.
They are more likely to hear a murmur if a child is ill, has a fever or is dehydrated, as in your son's case. This is because all these conditions cause blood to flow faster around the heart making normal blood flow noises sound louder.
It is also commoner to hear a murmur in a child under five or in a pregnant woman as their blood naturally flows much quicker through their circulation.
In most cases such murmurs are what doctors call 'innocent'. This means they are not due to any underlying heart disease or problem. If your son is otherwise fit and healthy and growing normally it is likely that his murmur is innocent.
His innocent murmur will make no difference to the way the heart works and will probably disappear or sound quieter as he grows older.
There are no implications for his health and he can do everything any other child would do as his heart is completely normal.
However, the doctor who heard the murmur may arrange tests of your son's heart to make sure it is normal as it is not always possible be to 100 per cent sure of this just by listening to his heart.
Such tests are all easy and painless. The usual tests are a chest X ray, an electrocardiogram (leads are stuck to your son's chest and record the electrical activity of his heart) or an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of his chest is performed in much the same way as the one of your tummy which you would have had in pregnancy).
Even if your son's murmur turns out to be due to a heart defect it is likely that, if he is otherwise well, the defect will correct itself without needing extra treatment by the time he reaches school age.
Fortunately it is only rarely that a murmur picked up at this age is caused by an abnormality of the heart that needs treatment or surgery.
