Is there a natural laxative for children?
There are many potential causes for constipation in children, and persistent cases do require a medical opinion. However, many cases of constipation will resolve with a simple, dietary approach.
It's a good idea to get your daughter to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, but I appreciate this is not always easy with small children! One simple thing you might try to help here is to make your daughter a fruit smoothie (e.g. banana and strawberry) each day. Passed off as regular fruit juice, most children will drink blended soft fruit quite happily.
Apart from fibre, the other essential ingredient in relieving constipation is fluid. Make water and diluted fruit juices freely available to your daughter and ensure she drinks plenty throughout the day.
Research suggests that a very important dietary factor in childhood constipation is milk. One study found that exclusion of milk from the diets of children with long-term severe constipation (one bowel motion every three to 15 days) led to a normal bowel habit in almost 70 per cent of cases.
In my opinion, the fact that your daughter has other known sensitivities makes the possibility of milk sensitivity even more likely. I recommend you try your daughter on a milk-free diet for two or three weeks to see if this helps.
Soya and rice-based milks (both available in calcium-fortified versions) make good alternatives to cow's milk and are widely available in health food stores and supermarkets.
