Are E numbers making my son hyperactive?
At this age it is hard to know whether your son's hyperactive behaviour is normal for his age or an early sign of a hyperactivity disorder.
You have probably heard many people talk about the 'terrible two's'. One in five two years olds has two or more tantrums a day. Your son's behaviour will usually be most active when he most wants your attention.
This can be when he is tired which may be why he seems hyperactive in the evening. If you are busy preparing an evening meal or talking on the telephone he may be extra active to make you notice him.
In addition to all this most two year olds find it impossible to sit still and concentrate for more than five minutes at a time. They prefer to be moving whenever they can, usually as quickly as possible. You will probably find that your son would rather run than walk and dance and jump around rather than stand still in one place.
If your son has true hyperactivity syndrome it will take at least another year or two of monitoring his behaviour before anyone will diagnose this as his problem. There are some features which he may have shown since babyhood, such as restlessness, difficulty feeding and poor irregular sleeping.
As he grows up he may be easily distracted, impulsive, active and accident prone, and even when involved in an activity such as watching television or reading a book with you he may be fidgety and apparently taking little in.
At this age the best way to help him is to give him lots of your attention when he is very active. Join him in an activity he enjoys and does not find frustrating. This may mean taking him outside to play football or to the park at some time in the day.
In the evening establish a routine such as bath time followed by a story or playing a quiet game before bed time. As phone calls may make his behaviour worse ask friends not to call at busy times, to delay their calls until he is in bed, or leave an answer-phone on.
If he has tantrums check his environment is safe, with no sharp corners nearby, then let him get on with his tantrum. There is no point in telling him off in the middle of a tantrum as he will not hear you and it will upset you more. Ignore him so that he learns that having a tantrum does not mean he attracts your attention or gets his own way.
In the end he will feel reassured because he will know what behaviour is or is not acceptable to you. When he calms down give him a big cuddle to remind him you love him.
Diet can sometimes have an affect on a child's activity. Some children with hyperactivity syndrome are sensitive to certain foods and become irritable and restless if they eat them. Cola drinks and sweets are a common cause.
Gluten-free diets or cutting out E numbers have not been shown to work in scientific trials. Trials of fish oils, flower oils or fatty acid treatments at Great Ormond Street children's hospital have not been found to help although occasionally parents report their children respond.
Your health visitor and GP will both be able to give you support and advice at this stage as your son's behaviour may well be part of his normal development.
The Hyperactive Children's Support Group has useful information about diets, but check with your GP before starting any diet in a child of this age as he will require supervision from a dietician: Mayfield House, Yapton Rd, Barnham, West Sussex PO22 OBJ. Tel: 01243 551313
