Can a weight problem hamper my chances of pregnancy?
Thanks for your question. Research into infertility has produced some mixed messages about the effect obesity may have on your success. Some studies have found that being overweight puts you at significantly greater risk of difficulties conceiving.
Other research, however, has found no difference in pregnancy rates between slim women and those who are overweight, suggesting that there are other factors which may come into play, such as whether you smoke or not.
It is easy to understand how it might lead to problems - fat tissue can produce a type of oestrogen hormone which interferes with the menstrual cycle.
Normally oestrogen is made by the ovary as part of egg development. Additional oestrogen can confuse the brain into thinking that the ovary is producing too much and cause it to give a signal to suppress growth of the egg.
When comparing women with established infertility, it is very clear that being overweight lowers the success rate of treatments which involve stimulating the ovary to produce eggs - such as IVF or ovarian stimulation with injectable drugs.
This effect is so strong that most fertility units will not offer treatment unless you are under a certain weight. This is not intended to be discriminatory, but purely a matter of fact that it just won't work unless weight is lost.
Having greater risk or lesser risk of difficulties doesn't give you a specific idea of your own chances and many overweight women get pregnant without difficulty.
There are other advantages to losing weight - apart from the well-known long-term benefits for your own health. Weight loss will make carrying the pregnancy easier and lower the chance of problems such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, an excessively large baby (macrosomia) as well as making a normal birth more likely.
