Is our baby allergic to dairy products?
It sounds as if your son may be sensitive to cow's milk as he gets a rash on his face and hands after having cow's milk.
But apparently he does not get the rash when you stop him having cow's milk and give him soya milk instead.
Other symptoms of cow's milk allergy are tummy aches, diarrhoea, being miserable or eczema.
Babies can get similar rashes to the one you describe for other reasons. If your son has developed this rash suddenly after months of successful feeding with cow's milk products then it is unlikely that he is sensitive to cow's milk.
However cow's milk is known to be one cause of food allergy.
Milk plays an important part in the diet of young children. The immune system of new babies is immature and more sensitive than that of older children.
It can react to the foreign protein in cow's milk. If you or your son's father, or any other close relative, suffers with allergies such as eczema, asthma, rhinitis (runny nose and eyes or severe hay fever) your son may be more at risk of these and some food allergies such as cow's milk allergy.
To be sure this is a true cow's milk allergy you need to challenge him with cow's milk, by giving him a small amount, after he has been off it and presumably free of rashes for a month or so.
See if he develops the same rash you described as previously happened after he had cow's milk. If he does, it is worth excluding all baby formula milk based on cow's milk, cow's milk itself and all dairy products for about a year.
Your son still needs all the vitamins and minerals present in cow's milk formula - your doctor can or health visitor can advise on which nondairy milk formulas are best to give him and your GP can prescribe appropriate formula milk for him.
Many children grow out of cow's milk allergy after a year or two so do not keep the fixed idea that your son can never have cow's milk or dairy products again.
Occasionally test him with a small amount of cow's milk after the age of one and if he does not develop a rash or any other symptoms such as diarrhoea or tummy ache gradually reintroduce milk into his diet.
If your son is allergic to cow's milk or you are an allergic family you can help reduce allergies developing in future children.
Do this by breastfeeding exclusively for the first four to six months, not having too much milk or milk products yourself and making sure your baby has no formula feeds at all as one bottle is enough to sensitise a baby.
If you are unable to breastfeed your doctor may advise a soya or specially modified formula feed.
Your say your son seems fine on soya milk. However some children react to soya or goat's milk in much the same way as they do to cow's milk - also goat's milk is not suitable for babies.
Therefore it's better to seek advice from your doctor or a paediatrician about how to feed any future babies.
You ask about treating the rash. If it is a cow's milk allergy then avoiding cow's milk as you are doing should be enough.
You can use Vaseline or moisturisers such as E45 around his mouth and on his hands to protect his skin from chapping or wind or sun exposure until it is fully healed.
