Can an infection stunt my baby's growth?
There are many reasons why your son may be skinny and seem disinterested in food; the most important thing is to work out whether your son's growth is within normal limits for his age.
His growth will also depend on how tall both of you as his parents are; if one or both of you are below average height he may also be below average size for his age.
Your first step needs to be a check up with your health visitor who can measure his height and weight accurately and plot them on a growth chart for his age.
You can compare his growth with previous measurements and see if his growth is falling below what would be expected.
If it is, then he needs a full check up by his GP who will the probably ask the hospital paediatrician who looks after his UTI's to check him over.
There are several issues you may need to bear in mind:
a) You ask whether his urinary tract infections (UTI's) could be affecting his growth. If he is getting recurrent UTI's these could make him feel under the weather and affect his appetite which in turn could stop him growing as well as he should.
However, you say he is on antibiotics. These are usually a low dose of antibiotic given once or twice a day on a long term basis i.e. for up to the first five years of his life.
The antibiotics are given to prevent UTI's. They protect your son's kidneys from scarring by infections in his urine tracking back up from his bladder to his kidneys.
Once he is over five years of age his kidneys are probably less at risk of such scarring and he may not need to continue with antibiotics.
Occasionally the antibiotics do not prevent UTI's - your son may not show any sign of infection except for a poor appetite.
For this reason your GP or specialist needs to check regular (perhaps monthly) samples of your son's urine by sending them to the hospital laboratory to be sure his urine is not infected.
If he is getting UTI's his antibiotics will need to be changed to a different type to prevent them recurring.
b) Parents are often concerned that the antibiotics in themselves can suppress appetite or have other long term effects on growth or ability to fight off infection.
In fact it is very rare for low dose antibiotics of the type used to prevent UTI's to have any effect on appetite or growth.
Your son's immunity will develop as well as that of any other child and is not affected by antibiotics given in this way.
c) Children of this age often become fussy and faddy about food. Your son may be very active and burning off more calories than he can make up with eating which is why he looks skinny.
If his height is increasing as expected on the growth chart he may well start eating better over the next year and gain more weight.
d) Some children with UTI's can also suffer with constipation. If your son is constipated this could put him off eating.
Increase the fluid and fruit and vegetable content of his diet. If he is not keen talk to your GP who can prescribe a mild laxative if necessary for a few months.
e) The UTI's could be a red herring! if your son is not growing it could be due to a completely different reason.
His GP or paediatrician needs to check him over thoroughly and if necessary arrange further tests or refer him to a growth specialist for a full assessment if they are concerned about his growth.
