Can natural remedies relieve the itching of eczema?
Eczema is a skin condition characterised by patches of sore, irritated, red and itchy skin.
Conventional treatment for eczema is based on the use of steroid creams that help to dampen the inflammation characteristic of this condition.
However, these creams very rarely bring lasting relief and their long-term use may damage or thin the skin.
Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine medication that also has sedative properties, and can be used to reduce itching and promote sleep.
The secret to getting rid of your son's itching is to control the underlying condition. In young children, one of the most common underlying factors in eczema is food sensitivity. Probably the worst offender in this respect is cow's milk. Rice milk makes a good alternative to this.
Other common triggers include cheese, citrus fruits - including orange juice - and eggs.
Also be wary of any foods your son tends to like a lot, because it is not uncommon for individuals to crave the foods to which they are sensitive. Elimination of these foods is very likely to help control your son's symptoms.
Certain nutrients may also benefit your son. Evening primrose oil (EPO) contains a healthy fat called gamma linolenic acid (GLA) which is metabolised into natural anti-inflammatory substances in the body.
Open 1,000 - 1,500 mg of EPO into your son's food each day. Other nutrients that appear to help in eczema include vitamin C and zinc. Give your son 500 mg of vitamin C and 7.5 - 15 mg of zinc each day, again as capsules opened into his food.
As a natural alternative to steroid creams, I recommend a product called Allergenics. Allergenics is a completely natural cream which contains extracts of soya (soy sterols) and liquorice (glycyrrhetinic acid) which can calm inflammation in the skin, but do not weaken it.
The cream also contains other plant-based substances known to help soothe and heal irritated skin including aloe vera and vitamin E. You will find Allergenics cream in good health food stores.
