What alternative therapy can I use to treat endometriosis?

During each menstrual cycle, the lining of the womb builds up and then is shed if pregnancy does not take place.

In endometriosis, womb tissue is found outside the womb itself. Common sites for the endometrial tissue include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and ligaments that support the uterus, and the area between the vagina and rectum.

This misplaced tissue develops into growths or lesions which respond to the menstrual cycle in the same way that the womb lining does, and this can cause considerable pain and discomfort.

Some of the most common symptoms of endometriosis include menstrual pain, pain during sex, and painful urination and/or bowel movements during periods. The condition is also associated with some cases of infertility.

It is not cleat what causes endometriosis. One theory is that it related to exposure to environmental toxins called 'dioxins'. One study in rhesus monkeys found a clear correlation between dioxin exposure and endometriosis.

Many sanitary towels and tampons are contaminated with dioxins, and it is seems prudent that women should use chemical-free sanitary-wear. Suitable products are often to be found in health food stores.

There is good evidence that endometriosis is perpetuated by the female hormone oestrogen. In fact, oestrogen therapy has been shown to worsen gynaecological conditions such as fibroids and endometriosis. This opens up a couple of options for natural treatments for endometriosis.

One is to reduce oestrogen levels through manipulation of the hormone balance in the body. Taking 40 drops of Agnus castus each morning may help with this.

Another approach is to improve liver function, which can help to reduce oestrogen levels by enhancing its breakdown in this organ.

Apart from eating a diet based on whole, unprocessed foods and drinking plenty of water, it might help you take a supplement of the herb Milk thistle which has liver-supporting properties. You will find a suitable supplement in your local health food store.
