Can light therapy cure SAD?*
Has the change in seasons left you feeling grumpy and tired?
Eight out of ten of us suffer a complaint called the winter blues caused by the lack of daylight at this time of year.
One in five of us suffers a more severe form of the condition - called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.
Both complaints are triggered because when our brains are deprived of sunlight in the autumn and winter our bodies produce too much of the 'sleepy' hormone melatonin. This has the effect of leaving sufferers feeling permanently tired and washed out.
But you don't have to suffer in silence. There are now a number of light therapies available that attempt to replace the natural sunlight we miss out on with a special high intensity artificial light.
Here we review three different types of light therapies. And click on the links in the blue box above for other ways to beat your winter blues!
Name of product: Natural Sunrise Alarm Clock
Claims: Instead of the crashing
Could the Sunrise alarm clock
turn you into a decent human
being in the mornings?
shock of a normal alarm, the device mimics nature, imitating the first faint glimmer of dawn before gradually increasing in brightness to reach full intensity. Because of this the body clock receives the proper signals and the mind rouses in its own time. SAD sufferers will begin to notice an improvement in symptoms after one or two days.
How to use it: You programme the light to come on gradually over either 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes before the time you actually want to wake up. The longer the time, the more gradual the intensity of light will be. Once the lamp has reached full intensity, an alarm will also sound.
Results: Tester one:
'For me the dawn alarm was a God-send. On dark, winter mornings, I usually wake up feeling like Neanderthal woman but when I used the dawn alarm the slow build up of light woke me up gently and gradually, and by the time the small alarm sound beeped to let me know it was time to get up, I was already wide awake, alert and ready to face the day.'
Tester two:
'The clock was very easy to programme and the instructions were clearly explained and easy to understand. I started off with the light coming on 30 minutes before the time I wanted to get up, so I set it for 6.30am to be fully awake by 7am. You can also use the light as an ordinary reading light so it was quite versatile too!
'However I found the light came on too brightly too quickly and woke me up sooner than I had wished. Although the light was not due to reach full intensity until 7am, by 6.40/6.45am I had already been woken up by the brightness. The light was so bright that it also used to wake up my boyfriend on the other side of the bed!
'Once I had been woken up earlier than I had wanted to, I either found it difficult to fall back to sleep or had been woken up permanently. This made me feel groggy and more tired for the rest of the day as it felt like I had not had enough sleep.
'After a month of interrupted mornings I decided to go back to using a normal alarm clock.'
Tester three:
'During the summer I always wake up when the sun rises, but during the winter I find getting up very traumatic. The alarm I currently use is so loud and nasty-sounding that I am quite literally wrenched out of sleep and feel wretched all day as a result.
'The daylight alarm has definitely helped with this. The 'sun' rises 15 minutes before I have to get up and I find I wake up a few times in that time before waking properly with the alarm. The alarm itself is much quieter and therefore not so shocking. Also, as I have already come to with the light coming on it is definitely a more peaceful way to wake up.'
