Crackdown on therapists
Tough new rules are needed to regulate alternative therapists and their medicine, a House of Lords Committee has recommended after a year long enquiry.
The science and technology committee claims quality control of complementary and alternative doctors is poor and fragmented.
The news looks set to prompt a series of reforms. There are now more alternative therapists than registered doctors in Britain - 40,000 compared to 36,000. One in five Britons uses some type of alternative treatment such as aromatherapy and homeopathy.
But almost anyone can set themselves up as a practitioner for most alternative treatments. Only osteopathy and chiropractics are regulated.
The Lords committee said there was enough evidence to show acupuncture and many herbal medicines were effective.
But it criticised some therapists for encouraging patients with serious conditions to use alternative treatments instead of traditional medicine.
The report also condemned some popular alternative medicines such as crystal therapy, traditional Chinese medicine and iridology - a technique which claims to assess health by looking at the eye.
The committee claimed there was 'sparse evidence' to prove they worked. The report said that those therapies 'aim to operate as an alternative to conventional medicine and have sparse or non-existent evidence bases'.
The Lords committee, headed by Lord Walton, began their investigation in a bid to improve regulation and training and decide which therapies should be available on the NHS.
They concluded that only alternative treatments with statutory regulation or 'a powerful mechanism of voluntary self-regulation' should be available on the health service, and then only through referral from a GP.
The report said that other therapies such as the Alexander Technique, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy and reflexology should be subjected to voluntary self-regulation and should 'control their claims according to the evidence available to them'.
The Lords committee said the public needed more independent information about alternative therapies and called on the Department of Health to provide it.
