Retail therapy may still be regarded as just an excuse for extravagance but its little known cousin, fashion therapy, has been given the medical profession's stamp of approval with the setting up of the world's first specialist unit.
The Arthur Centre at the University Hospital of Marseilles is offering teenage patients the chance to dress up in the creations of local designers in order to raise self esteem and treat such classic adolescent problems as depression and anorexia.
Michele Battista, the head of the unit, said: 'As soon as patients put on some clothes and leave the unit we've won. They are proud of their bodies again.'
Among those providing clothes for fashion therapy is Richard Garnier, a psychiatrist and designer who has his own label, Dr Jekyll.
He said: 'I design flashy clothes because I don't believe in dull colours. Young people are always wearing the same labels and find it difficult to stand out from a group. Looking for a style is a great pleasure and contributes to well-being. It's essential.'
Research by the unit has found that certain clothes are symptomatic of certain diseases. Bulimics prefer dark clothes and anorexics will chose large sizes. Part of the therapy is to wean patients off outfits which appear to reinforce their conditions.
One patient, Maila, 16, who is being treated for depression, prefers dark clothes but is being encouraged to wear more colourful garments. She said: 'This gear isn't really my style. I prefer my own clothes to be more discreet.'
The centre opened a year ago and its first annual report has indicated significant successes.
The unit is being supported with donations from local banks and also from one of the world's most famous fashion victims, multi-millionaire divorcée Mouna Ayoub, who spends more than £500,000 a year on clothes by designers such as John Galliano and Karl Lagerfeld.
Ms Ayoub, who wed billionaire Nasser Al-Rashid in 1979, herself used clothes as a form of therapy during her years living in the isolated environment of a Saudi Arabian marriage. She once said: 'Fashion became a medicine - my only way out of a very restricted life.'
Following her divorce in 1996, she had the largest wardrobe clear-out ever at Christie's and raised around £100,000 for charity. Last summer the arrival of her haute couture collection was one of Marseilles' most glittering events.
The city's Fashion Institute has been increasingly successful in attracting big-name Parisian designers including Azzedine Alaia and Christian Lacroix for prestigious exhibitions.
