Turn up the heat for your body's sake

When it's cold outside all we want to do is snuggle up and be warm. But apart from the comforting elements, heat has some amazing health benefits.

According to medical experts, heat is great for muscular tension and increases flexibility. It also has strong cardiovascular effects because when we sweat the heart pushes the blood to the surface, opening up the skin vessels which promotes blood circulation.

A rise in temperature stimulates the nervous system and calms the mind. As a beauty aid, heat opens up the pores and stimulates the elimination of waste through the skin.

But, away from your central heating, where can you find the warmth you need to feel great and look great? Here are the top five sources we've found:

1. La Stone Therapy: The ultimate pampering experience designed to massage the body while warming you up.
How it works: La Stone therapy is said to be ten times more effective than ordinary massage. Heated basalt rocks are placed along the chakras - certain energy points - along the spine. These lava rocks found in Arizona hold the heat for up to two hours.

The practitioner places them under the spine, between the toes, around the neck and on the palms of the hand. The combination of kneading movements from the masseur and the heat from the rocks penetrates deeply into the muscles.
Contact: A one-and-a-half hour session starts from £60. The British School of Complementary Therapy, Tel: 020 7224 2394. Becca Teers, Tel: 020 7491 8882.

2. Steam room: The steam from hot moist air benefits the body both inside and out.
How it works: Internally, wet steam works wonders on the lungs. Hot vapours slow down the growth of harmful bacteria or viruses. Like an inhalation, steam opens up the bronchioles - airways in the lungs.
Externally, moist heat relaxes tight muscles. This promotes blood circulation because it allows oxygen and nutrients to flow into the blood stream more easily.
Steaming is also good for the skin. Sweating profusely means the skin - which is the main organ of toxin elimination - removes toxins from the body.
But be warned: excessive steaming can lead to dehydration. Alternate your steam sessions with three minute breaks. Staying longer than 20 minutes in a steam room can lead to heat exhaustion.

3. Sauna: The compact dry heat of a sauna tends to be hotter than a steam room. Relaxing in a sauna heated to 80 degrees centigrade improves blood circulation.
How it works: Dry heat causes the blood vessels to dilate and when alternated with a cold shower, the blood vessels constrict stimulating the circulation system.
A stint in the sauna is great for your skin. Use a skin scraper or metal brush to stimulate the sebaceous glands. These glands produce oil called sebum which protects your skin by creating a barrier.
Dispersing sebum moisturises the skin and removes black heads and pustules - pussy spots. Dry heat allows muscles to become more flexible. Try stretching gently in the sauna. This will lengthen the muscles and help them to relax.
A five-to-ten minute session in a sauna is recommended, but you can remain for longer if you feel comfortable. If you feel dizzy, light headed or lethargic leave the sauna and drink plenty of water.
Contact: The British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy, Tel: 020 7435 7830.

4. Mud body wrap: A mud body wrap is a very comforting way of relieving muscular tension.
How it works: You are covered head to toe in mud which has been heated in a microwave. You are then wrapped up in silver foil for 20 minutes. As the mud is high in mineral content, it soothes and calms down the body.
This process relieves muscle tension, aches and pains. As you wait to be heated up, a masseur performs a scalp massage which soothes muscular tension around the head and neck.
Contact:: A mud body wrap session lasts one-and-a-quarter hour. A session costs £52. Ring Joy Weston, Tel: 020 7229 4141/4111.

5. Reiki: Reiki is the popular ancient Buddhist form of mystic healing.
How it works: The channeling of energy is transmitted from one person. As the practitioner gently touches the body, heat is transmitted from the practioner's hands. The tingling heat unblocks energy and helps release stagnant tension. Contact: A one to one-and-a-half hour session starts from £30. The Reiki Training and Treatment Centre, Tel 020 8563 7590.
