How to spot and treat ADD

Doctors now believe that many thousands of women in Britain are undiagnosed sufferers of attention deficit disorder.

The condition - normally associated with hyperactive young boys - can be more difficult to recognise in girls and women as female sufferers are often simply shy and dreamy.

Here is our guide to how to recognise if you are a sufferer. Further down the page we also offer a guide to how to treat the illness and where to seek help from a support group.

How to spot ADD

Look at the list of symptoms below. If you have suffered most of these symptoms since childhood consult your GP.

• Frequent forgetfulness
• Problems remembering to do things you've intended to do
• Having problems completing projects you have started
• Being told often at school 'could try harder'
• An inability to sit still

Often being late and rushing
• Being easily distracted
• Often going off at tangents in conversations
• Interrupting conversations more than most people and talking too much
• Difficulty with household bills and paperwork
• Frequent daydreaming
• Feeling constantly disorganised and overwhelmed by your day-to-day life
• Making impulsive decisions

How to treat ADD

There is no known cure for ADD but there are a number of treatments that can help sufferers manage the condition. A combination of treatments are usually most effective.

The first step is diagnosis. This can be difficult because the condition is so under-recognised in adults. The first step should be to see your GP to ask for a referral to a specialist in ADD. There are now two specialist clinics for ADD in adults in the UK - one at the Maudsley Hospital in London and the other at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.

After diagnosis many patients may be offered medication to stabilise chemicals in the brain. The most commonly prescribed drugs for the condition are Ritalin, Dexedrine and Adderall. Antidepressants and antihistamines may also be used.

Therapy is another popular treatment for ADD, either on its own or in combination with medication, although it can be difficult to access through the NHS. Therapy aims to teach the sufferer certain 'coping mechanisms' which should help them to avoid situations which the condition might make it difficult for them to cope with.

Support groups

There are a number of websites now dedicated to supporting sufferers: www.addcontact.org.uk. www.addmirablewomen.com and www.addvance.com

You can also contact ADDers support group on 01843 851145 or ADDISS on 020 8906 9068
