Stress and HIV: A new, small study found that stress affects the body's ability to use drugs to fight HIV infection.
The study found a correlation between how HIV-positive men responded to stress and how much the antiretroviral drugs reduced HIV virus in the blood and increased the immune system cells that HIV destroys. The drugs were four times more effective in those who did not get stressed easily as those who were high-strung.
Researchers thus recommend those taking the drugs try relaxation techniques and other methods to reduce stress. More information is in the Oct. 23 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences; abstract online at www.pnas.org.
Help with elder care: Karen Stephenson Brown, a CPA and consultant with experience in long-term care, finance and technology, has created an online clearinghouse for families and professionals evaluating elder-care options.
This award-winning site, www.ElderWeb.com, addresses topics such as elder law, insurance (annuities, long-term care insurance and more) and housing and care options. It includes a comprehensive list of elder care-related Web sites and, for those who live in one state with an elderly mother in another, the "Eldercare Locator" describes organizations in her state.
Take an aspirin: A new study concluded aspirin can safely be used to prevent preeclampsia, a condition that develops in 2 to 8 percent of all pregnancies and is marked by dangerously high blood pressure late in pregnancy. The study pooled data from five recent clinical trials that compared the effects of low-dose aspirin (50 to 100 milligrams a day) to a placebo or no treatment on about 500 women who were considered at high risk of preeclampsia. Those assigned to take aspirin developed preeclampsia 45 percent less often than the others. Aspirin caused no abnormal bleeding in the fetuses or the babies. The findings appear in the November issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
