You are getting sleepy ... and possibly strengthening your immune system at the same time. According to researchers at Ohio State University, hypnosis and related relaxation techniques can help prevent the weakening of the immune response that can follow periods of acute stress. Medical and dental students, who face stressful exams, were the guinea pigs for this study, which was reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. The study used a test designed to measure certain white-blood cells important to the immune response. Those who practiced self-hypnosis had better immune responses.
Pregnant women who watched the terrorist attacks may have an increased risk of giving birth to a low-weight baby. Researchers, in a study to be published later this year in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, looked at births by women who experienced "communal bereavement" over a traumatic event. The researchers looked at women giving birth after two incidents in Sweden — the 1986 murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme, and the deaths of 900 people in a ferry sinking. Ralph Catalano, a professor of public health at the University of California, Berkeley, and one of the authors of the study, linked the premature deliveries to excess levels of cortisol, a hormone that can be produced by stress.
Runny noses and asthma appear to be linked through certain genes, Japanese researchers said at the 11th European Respiratory Society Annual Congress. The results suggest that seasonal allergic rhinitis and asthma share similar molecular mechanisms, said the lead researcher, Dr. Masana Shibasaki of the University of Tsukuba. Probing the link between the two was highlighted by the World Health Organization, which decided in December 1999 to make it a focus of a study group. The head of that group, Dr. Jean Bousquet, a French researcher, said upper and lower airways should be considered as a unique entity influenced by a common and probably evolving inflammatory process.
Good news for wine drinkers — at least those who have suspected sulfites had something to do with their wine-induced asthma. In fact, say researchers at the University of Western Australia in Perth, sulfites are rarely the cause of a drop in lung function or air flow. The findings, they conclude, suggest that "the role of sulfites and/or wine in triggering asthmatic reactions has been overestimated." But Dr. Hassan Vally, one of the researchers, said more sensitive tests may identify more subtle changes in airways for people sensitive to food and food chemicals.
Men have Viagra, women have Niagara? Swedish women are flocking to a caffeine-and-herb drink they believe is an aphrodisiac, paying up to $4.50 a bottle. But they'll have to look for it under a new name soon: Pfizer, maker of Viagra, objected to Niagara, and this month the drink's name changes to Nexcite. U.S. distributor Lari Williams, a coffee-shop owner from Little Rock, Ark., says she's careful to call it a "romance-enhancing drink," so the Food and Drug Administration doesn't ding her for promoting it as a sex aid. While there is no scientific proof it works, no one has actually studied it, either. When she stumbled across the drink, Williams said, she saw a rosy future.
