Cons: Contains few vitamins or minerals - apart from a trace of nutrients from the eggs and butter - little fibre and is relatively high in fat and cholesterol. One slice contains about a third of a woman's daily recommended intake of saturated fat. Commercially produced sponges contain trans fats - the unhealthy by-product of hydrogenating vegetable oil. The Department of Health recommends we consume only 5g of trans fats a day. Sponges made using a polyunsaturated margarine and a jam filling are far healthier.
