Pros: A fortified wine, sweet or dry and flavoured with herbs. As with other alcoholic drinks, vermouth in moderation can offer protection against heart disease by enhancing the dilation of arteries, allowing blood to flow more freely.
Cons: Like other dark alcoholic drinks, sweet vermouth contains congeners, the chemicals produced during fermentation, which give drinks their flavour and colour. These are additives that can cause headaches and nausea. Better options are 'paler' drinks, such as wine, gin or vodka. Even if your immune system is in good order supported by a diet high in nutrients, alcohol can inhibit the beneficial activity of the immune cells. Excessive drinking leads to cirrhosis, pancreatitis, weight gain and raised blood pressure. It also encourages platelets in the blood to become stickier. Some research suggests that an excess of alcohol may interfere with the absorption of calcium, which is essential for strong bones. Most experts agree that alcohol consumption should not exceed more than 3-4 units a day for men (1 unit equals a single measure of vermouth) and 2-3 units a day for women.
