Veal

Units Calories Protein Carbo-
hydrates
Fat
Veal (fillet, roast) per 100g 230.00 31.60 0.00 11.50

Pros: Veal, the meat of milk-fed calves, is low in fat - less than half the fat of lean beef - and high in protein. It is a good source of B vitamins, especially B3, which is essential for providing cellular energy, as well as potassium, zinc and phosphorous. Lean veal escalopes contain less fat than lean steak, but only about half the iron and zinc.

Cons: Milk-fed veal supplies only half the iron of beef - though it is higher if calves are allowed to feed from their mothers and graze. Though veal is a relatively low-fat red meat, the World Cancer Research Fund say that consumption of red meat should be limited to 90g a day. Eating fatty or processed meat products raises the risk of heart disease and some cancers. Eating veal also raises issues of cruelty to the calves who are often taken from their mothers at an early age, reared in poor conditions and transported in closely packed crates.
