Gene that can scare you out of your mind
Scientists have discovered an 'anxiety gene' that makes people more fearful, it was claimed yesterday.
A team of researchers reported the discovery after showing volunteers photographs of people looking menacing.
Those with the gene reacted in a much different way to those who did not have it.
A small almond-shaped part of the brain which responds when a person is scared became more active.
The gene - a 'short' variant of the human serotonin transporter gene - has also been linked to autism and manic depression.
People with the 'long' variant of the gene experienced less brain activity in the organ's 'hub of fear' - known as the amygdala.
Previous studies have found that the more outgoing a person is the stronger their amygdala's response tends to be to happy expressions when they are being shown photographs of people who are smiling and laughing.
Researcher Dr Daniel Weinbergerby, of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, said: 'By showing how a variation in a gene exerts its influence on the brain's centre for fear processing, this finding may lend credence to earlier reports linking the short gene variant to slightly higher levels of anxiety.
'How biologically reactive we are to a signal of danger, which is partly heritable, can place us at risk for an anxiety disorder. Or it may be an adaptive, positive attribute, such as increased vigilance, depending on the circumstances.'
In the study - details of which are published today in the journal Science - 28 people were shown a fearful or angry face while having their brains scanned.
In a separate experiment, researchers analysed DNA from 72 volunteers to determine which version of the human serotonin transporter gene they had.
Then the volunteers were put through a laboratory test often used in psychology experiments called 'the CO2 challenge'.
Each person received two breaths through a mouthpiece - the first was oxygen, the second a mixture of oxygen and carbon dioxide designed to make people feel momentarily breathless.
In people with anxiety disorders, the carbon dioxide often triggers a panic attack.
The scientists found that people with the 'short' version of the key gene expressed more fear during the experiment, strengthening the theory that it is involved in anxiety.
Dr Weinberger said that the research 'provides potential insight into one factor that contributes to the way people experience emotion'.
