The superdrug taking on Viagra
A powerful drug that can revive the sex lives of impotent men for up to 24 hours at a time will be launched today in Britain.
Cialis, which is being made available on the NHS, is said to last seven times longer than Viagra. In France, it has already been nicknamed 'le weekend'.
Viagra users have to carefully time when they take a pill. It works best when taken around an hour before having sex, but wears off within a few hours. Cialis does not mean patients are in a state of arousal for 24 hours.
Rather, it appears to enable them to become aroused when stimulated, allowing them to take the drug long before they need it and inject spontaneity into their love lives. The launch will herald one of the most expensive and furious pharmaceutical battles in recent history.
Since it was unveiled five years ago,Viagra has been used by some 20 million men worldwide and captured a market worth a staggering £1 billion. The blue, diamond-shaped tablet, manufactured by Pfizer, is credited with reviving millions of flagging sex lives.
Cialis, made by Eli Lilly comes in yellow, almond-shaped pills, and will be available on the NHS to men who fit the same criteria that are currently applied to Viagra.
Those whose impotence is caused by clinical conditions, such as cancer, renal failure, diabetes or pelvic injury - around 20 per cent of all sufferers - are eligible.
