Foot massage: what to expect
If you're looking for a deep working massage, think feet. Femail.co.uk sent Naomi Coleman to try out chavutti thirumal - an invigorating, detoxifying foot treatment imported from South India.
When it comes to massage how can feet possibly compete with fingers? And who really wants a pair of cheesy, crusty feet walking all over their body?
These were my thoughts as I dropped in on chavutti thirumal practitioner Emma Field in her London studio.
I was invited into a warm, fragrant room with a thick floor mat in the centre. Just as I began to mellow, I noticed a thick rope dangling at head level from the ceiling and immediately resumed my prejudices.
As I lay completely naked in a cross position (no chance of modesty here) I wondered what would happen next.
Once covered in a warm mix of almond oil, Emma began her foot work. Using one single leg movement, Emma travelled the entire length of my body from fingers to toes.
All became clear as Emma held on to the rope to balance and distribute her weight evenly over my body.
To my surprise the leg stroke felt like a sensitive hand, but had far more power. This is because the pressure travels directly from Emma's legs activated by the strong muscles in her stomach.
Using the heel and ball of her feet, Emma stretched out my spine, creating spaces between each vertebrae - the numerous stubby projections that connect with adjacent bones in the spinal cord.
Emma explained that creating these spaces frees up any locked toxins found hiding between each vertebrae. I found myself breathing more deeply and following the rhythm of Emma's leg movements.
Employing over 23 different strokes, Emma used everything from brisk light movements to spiralling and penetrating actions.
For the last half hour, Emma used her hands to tap into certain pressure - or energy - points located in the face, forehead, jawline and earlobes. The session was rounded off with a blissful scalp massage.
This form of deep-tissue massage is not for the faint hearted. Although sensitive and relaxing, it penetrates intensely into the body's muscles. But after 90 minutes, I felt relaxed, yet energised instead of sleepy like with some hand massages.
As I stood up I felt six inches taller and any aches and pains had completely vanished. With my newly stretched spine, I found myself breathing slowly and deeply.
It's now two days later and the therapeutic effects of this full body massage are still with me. Who needs hands when there are feet?
