People who eat low-fat foods rarely lose weight, warned scientists from the American Heart Association recently.
They say low-fat alternatives often contain as many calories as conventional products, and sometimes more.
Here, we look at some of the most popular reduced-fat foods, and find out why they aren't always as slimline as they may seem . . .
FLYTE
Per bar: 196 calories, 33g carbohydrate, 6.4g fat
'Taste the chocolate, skip some fat,' says the label - but it fails to tell you that if it is your waistline you are worried about, other similar sized chocolate bars don't rack up as many calories.
For example, a Flake has 16 calories fewer and a Ripple 22 fewer. Both are at least 40pc lower in sugar. A Flyte contains around six teaspoons of sugar, but a Flake and a Ripple have fewer than four.
SAINSBURY'S BE GOOD TO YOURSELF GARLIC BAGUETTE Per half ciabatta: 410 calories, 62.5g carbohydrate, 11.5g fat.
Even with 25 pc less fat and healthier branding, garlic bread is never going to be a slimline option. At 400 calories per portion, you'll be adding as many calories in the form of the accompaniment as you are likely to be getting from your main meal.
DANEPAK LEAN AND LOW BACON
Per 3 rashers: 128 calories, 0g carbohydrate, 8.2g fat.
This bacon may be lower in fat than most, but it still contains 11 pc fat - three times more than the maximum legal amount for using the term 'low fat' on labelling. And three rashers still supply 15 pc of the maximum amount of salt that a woman should eat in a day.
GO AHEAD CHOCOLATE DREAM CAKE BARS
Per bar: 142 calories, 23g carbohydrate, 4.8g fat.
A high sugar content - the equivalent
of four level teaspoonfuls per cake - more than counteracts the 95 pc fat-free claim. It's calories that count when it comes to weight gain. A Cadbury's Jammy Strawberry Mini Roll, Flake Cake or Lyons Chocolate Cup Cake all contain around 10-30 fewer calories.
Although, on average, reduced-fat digestives have 25pc less fat, they have half a teaspoon of sugar more per biscuit. This means the overall energy saving is a mere four calories. So more than one or two biscuits isn't healthy - whether they are of the reduced-fat kind or not.
GO AHEAD SPRING ONION CRINKLINS
Per 30g (a fifth of a large tube): 131 calories, 20.7g carbohydrate, 4.3g fat
Crinklins, which consist of starch, flour and potato welded together with oil and a raft of flavourings, claim to be 85pc fat free. But, of course, that means there's still 15 pc fat - compared with a truly low-fat food which would contain less than three pc fat.
HELLMAN'S LIGHT
Per tablespoon: 60 calories, 1.3g carbohydrate, 6g fat
Compared with fullfat mayonnaise, the reduced-fat version is much better. But it still has as much fat, gram for gram, as blue cheese, and over 50 pc more than single cream. Just two tablespoons provide 120 calories - which is probably more than four times the calorie content of the salad greens you are putting it on.
PHILADELPHIA LIGHT Per 30g serving: 57 calories, 1g carbohydrate, 4.8g fat.
This is 33 pc lower fat than the full-fat sort, but it is still a medium-fat soft cheese - which means it contains four times as much fat as cottage cheese.
Calories are reduced by only 25 per cent, which adds up to a saving of just 18
calories per 30g serving.
SAFEWAY EAT SMART HEALTHY FLAKES
Per bowl with semi-skim milk: 175 calories, 29.8g carbohydrate, 2.5g fat.
Low fat these cereal flakes may be, but you may be smarter still if you choose a bowl of bran flakes. The bran flakes provide 16 fewer caloriesand three times more fibre. They also contain only half as much salt, although they aren't quite as heavily fortified with vitamins.
