Why do I get gas?
Oh dear - this is definitely a problem that you could do without, but it is unfortunately quite common and usually due to an extra sensitivity to soluble fibre. This type of fibre is fermented in the gut by gas-producing bacteria, and too much can produce bloating and discomfort.
If you're prone to this problem, you should aim to achieve, but not exceed, five portions of fruit and vegetables daily and ensure that all the other fibre-containing foods you eat are those which contain the insoluble variety.
As a quick check list, foods richest in soluble fibre include most fresh fruit and vegetables (including juices and smoothies), especially when eaten peeled; dried fruit; baked beans (and other sorts of beans like kidney beans); barley (e.g. pearl barley) and seeds, e.g. sunflower, flax, sesame and porridge.
Rich in insoluble fibre are brown and wholemeal bread, whole wheat pasta All Bran, Bran Flakes, shredded wheat, Shreddies, Ryvita, brown rice and nuts.
It also pays to eat smaller portions of high fibre foods through the day (rather than one or two large meals with high fibre foods for example), and to try new sources of fibre cautiously. I'd also try introducing a friendly bacteria supplement, which could be a drink like Yakult or Proviva, or a capsule such as Biocare Bio-Acidophilus. These types of supplements have been found useful in reducing gas and bloating in people with irritable bowel syndrome.
