Why fibre can protect your heart - and help you slim
Mention the word fibre and most of us imagine bowls full of health food that taste like sawdust.
Let's face it, it's anything but glamorous. Or is it? Well the truth is that fibre could soon help you to look your best ever.
That's because as well as all its other well-known health benefits fibre can help you slim. In fact it's a well established fact that the extra bulk that fibre contains will help you feel fuller for longer - so help you stave off hunger pangs and lose weight.
Research also shows that fibre protects the heart and the digestive system, prevents diabetes and helps protect the stomach, colon, mouth and gall bladder from cancer.
Eating fibre is particularly good for the bowels. It helps to prevent constipation and haemorrhoids because as it passes through the bowels its bulk stimulates the muscles in the bowels to push waste out of the body.
But the sad fact is, most people in Britain eat woefully little. The recommended daily intake of fibre for adults is 18g a day. In fact most of us eat just two thirds of this - around 12g.
So how can you get more fibre into your diet, without resorting to bowl upon bowl of bran? Eating the right amount doesn't have to taste awful. Everything from avocados to coconuts, baked beans and blackcurrants contain roughage that has crucial importance for your health.
Fibre comes mainly from plant cell walls so it is contained in food groups such as bread and cereals, fruits and vegetables and nuts, beans and pulses.
And some of your favourite foods may well contain surprising amounts. A 400g tin of baked beans, for example, contains 14 times more fibre as a portion of brown rice. Peas are
another surprisingly good source as are mangoes, papayas and pears.
You should try to get some of your fibre from whole grain breads and cereals. Whole grain foods are those in which all parts of the grain are used. Research published two years ago in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggested that a diet including plenty of whole grain foods may reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 30 per cent. They are also thought to prevent cancer and provide antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates and other beneficial plant chemicals.
Our picture gallery, listed above, shows the delicious foods you can eat to get more fibre into your diet and you can read how many grams of fibre there are in your favourite foods.
