Gym may not help women slim
It is a statistic sure to depress any woman who goes to the gym.
No matter how hard you work out, you are just as likely to gain weight as lose it.
According to research, women find vigorous exercise gives them a bigger appetite - and provides them with an excuse to eat more.
And if that isn't bad enough, the study found that men who followed the same fitness regime lost an average of 11lb.
Professor Debra Sullivan, who led the research at the University of Kansas, said: "As a woman the results of the study are a little bit depressing, because it's harder for women to lose weight.
"We've all known that, but this definitely proves it. We have to exercise and cut calories.
"I'd recommend that if you're a man and you want to lose weight, go and exercise. If you're a woman, it's much hazier, much trickier."
Strict exercise regime
The researchers studied a group of 74 overweight men and women aged between 17 and 35 for 16 months.
They asked half to stick to a strict daily exercise regime and allowed the others to carry on with their normal routine.
Neither group was asked to change their diet.
Subjects in the exercise group walked on a treadmill for up to 45 minutes five days a week, under a researcher's supervision.
By the end of it, the men had lost 11lb on average, but the number of women who had slimmed down was equal to the number who had grown heavier - so on average they weighed the same.
However, they fared better than the women in the other group - who had not been given an exercise regime to follow - who gained an average of 7lb.
The experts said the study showed that women wanting to lose weight must recognise that eating a balanced diet is at least as important as exercise.
They said eating the wrong foods can leave the body with too big a task in terms of burning calories through exercise and add that women burn fewer calories because they are smaller than men.
Diet misconceptions
Professor Sullivan added: "I think it's easier for people to believe they can eat whatever they want as long as they exercise.
"If we read the adverts in magazines or watch television, we are being told that all we have to do to lose weight is to exercise."
Amanda Wynne, of the British Dietetic Association, said: "It is essential to consider diet as well as exercise in a weight-loss programme, although the women may have replaced fat with muscle, which weighs more.
"It's also likely the women responded to increased feelings of hunger after exercise by eating more.
"However, they would have benefited from improved circulation and cardiovascular fitness."
Last week, researchers at Loughborough University - one of Britain's leading sports universities - said people who go to the gym would be better off incorporating exercise into their daily routines by walking more, gardening and cleaning.
