Diet to boost your child's brain

Children's intelligence can be increased by vitamin supplements - but there is a catch. Taking extra vitamins only works for children whose diets are deficient and has no effect on the academic performance of well-nourished children, says leading psychologist Dr David Benton.

A research review of ten studies carried out during the last decade should finally settle the controversy over whether popping vitamin pill affects children's IQ.

The review was triggered by publication of a controversial study in 1988 in which Dr Benton was involved. It found that giving a vitamin and mineral supplement to schoolchildren improved scores on an intelligence test.

Widespread publicity on TV and in newspapers led to thousands of middle-class parents emptying the shelves of healthfood shops.

'There were lorryloads of fresh supplies of vitamin supplements coming in from the Continent,' says Dr Benton. 'But it left a lot of parents up in the air wondering whether their children really needed them.'

Two-thirds of studies since then show vitamin supplements can boost the IQ of children with a nutritional deficiency. 'The message is not that vitamins improve intelligence but that a poor diet can cause problems,' concludes Dr Benton, of the Department of

Psychology at the University of Wales, Swansea. A key study from California used blood tests to check the vitamin status of children before they took supplements. IQ scores increased only in children with low vitamin levels at the start.

'If you're well-nourished then supplements don't do any good and general intelligence does not change,' he says. 'But some children who have a poor diet can benefit.'

Dr Benton points out that dieting by children, or over-reliance on convenience foods, might lead to subtle deficiencies in vitamin and mineral intake even in well-off households.

'Some parents might want to give their children supplements as an "insurance" policy. That's fine as long as they realise that they could be wasting their money and that if there is an improvement it won't be dramatic,' he says.
